Today marks the 241st anniversary of the British attack on New London and Groton. A topic I have spent the better part of the last decade researching and writing on. My new book on the raid is finally coming out, hopefully, next spring.
A lot of new and fascinating things were uncovered in my research, including a whole bunch of new defenders. All of which will finally be revealed, many for the first time ever. One of these unsung and forgotten heroes was Shoram Stanton.
Not a lot is known about him, but he is believed to have been a free black from Groton. He was probably in his 30's or 40's during the war. Between July 15-October 26, 1780, Shoram served as a temporary levy is the 1st Connecticut Regiment.
On September 6, 1781, Shoram probably volunteered with the militia to defend the fort upon hearing the alarm guns. While we do not know what he did at Fort Griswold or where he was positioned during the fighting, he survived the battle unscathed, was captured and carried to New York City, where he remained in captivity until he was exchanged around November 1781.

Afterwards, Shoram placed a damage claim to the state was allotted 6 pounds and 9 shillings in Connecticut currency. This was probable due to property lost during the battle, such as his musket and clothing.
