From this vantage point, on September 6, 1781, along the historic Post Road in Groton, Connecticut, 46 green-coated jagers, under a lieutenant, were dispersed amongst the trees and rocks. Their orders were to protect the British rear and to hold back any militia attempts to reinforce or aid Fort Griswold. For almost ten hours, they maintained this position against militia, under the overall command of Lt. Col. Nathan Gallup, along Birch Plain Creek, inflicting a number of casualties on them. Who were these jagers? Were they from Hesse or Ansbach? I received a tip the other day as to their identity. As a result, I dispatched a researcher to the National Archives in Great Britain on a very, very last minute research trip, to retrieve some documents. Should receive them sometime next week. Learn more about this skirmish along Birch Plain Creek, the "Forgotten Front" of the Battle of Groton Heights in my upcoming book, "The Traitor's Homecoming: Benedict Arnold's Raid on New London, Connecticut, September 4-13, 1781" due out May 2024.
